What the assistant can actually do beyond chatting, and why tool turns take longer.

What can the assistant actually do?

Beyond plain chat, the assistant can use real tools when a request calls for them:

  • Search and read the web for current information.
  • Work with files in your workspace: create, edit, search, and present finished files for download.
  • Run code and shell commands to build or verify things.
  • Generate and edit images (signed-in users).
  • Describe uploaded images and read files you attach.

Why is a tool turn slower than a normal chat?

Tool turns run in steps — search, read the results, maybe another step, then answer — and each step is a separate model round. You'll see progress cards as each tool runs, so you can follow what it's doing.

Are there things the assistant can't do?

It can't act outside this conversation: no sending emails, no posting to social media, no logging into your accounts, no shopping or payments. Its tools reach the web, its own workspace, and its own compute — nothing logged in as you.

It also can't promise accuracy on its own. When a question depends on current facts, ask it to search, and check what it cites.
